Social support can be one of those positive factors that influences the ability to lose weight and keep it off. All you need is someone that you know will support and motivate you to succeed.
According to WebMD, a good dieting buddy is not always your best friend or partner. The best diet buddies are two people who share a common goal and know they can count on one another. So, you can already have a friend who fits that category, but not everyone has the same weight loss goals, which is why it is so crucial to find the right buddy.
There are many different ways to use the buddy system for dieting. One can be to simply schedule when to work out together several times a week. Another can be to help plan meal preps together and swap healthy recipe ideas. The main goal should be to always be available to each other for any dieting and weight loss needs.
It also may be a good idea to create a “buddy contract,” which can help both of you set up your short- and long-term goals for dieting. It is not necessary, but it can help with communication and getting the most out of a dieting partnership.
If your buddy system doesn’t seem to be working out or you feel like you are not getting the most out of the experience, don’t be afraid to call it quits. According to WebMD, it can either be that you are not getting what you need from your buddy, or they are asking too much of you. Have a heart to heart, and if that doesn’t help the situation, then perhaps it’s time to move on.
